This is What Environmental Injustice Looks Like
Environmental injustice is a harsh reality that many communities face, particularly those in the City of Roanoke's most vulnerable neighborhoods. It manifests in various ways, painting a stark picture of inequality and neglect.
Lack of Access to Clean Air: In these neighborhoods, residents are disproportionately exposed to high levels of pollution due to the proximity of industrial facilities, highways, and other sources of contamination. As a result, community members suffer from higher rates of respiratory illnesses and other health issues.
Contaminated Water Sources: Pollution from nearby factories or outdated infrastructure can lead to water sources being contaminated with harmful substances, posing serious health risks to those who rely on them.
Urban Heat Islands: The lack of green spaces and abundance of concrete surfaces in vulnerable neighborhoods contribute to the urban heat island effect. Residents endure sweltering temperatures during the summer months, facing heat-related illnesses and discomfort that are exacerbated by climate change.
Disproportionate Impacts of Natural Disasters: When natural disasters strike, the most vulnerable communities are often hit the hardest. Limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and the lack of support systems leave residents struggling to recover and rebuild in the aftermath of hurricanes, flooding, or other climate-related events.
These examples demonstrate the stark disparities that exist in our city and highlight the urgent need for action. At Roanoke Coalition for Environmental Justice, we are committed to advocating for equitable policies, holding officials accountable, and working towards a future where all residents can enjoy clean air, clean water, and a safe environment. Together, we can address environmental injustice and ensure a healthier, more sustainable future for Roanoke's most vulnerable communities.
